As a regular marathon-runner and super-athlete before ALS, it’s no surprise that Rhonda’s hyper-competitiveness is undiminished. Rhonda calls her Catrike Trail one of her “retooling things”, saying, “when I’m on my trike, I’m completely healthy and free from ALS and I love it!”
She continues to roam freely with husband Curt. Recently riding the 22 miles of the Crooked River Oregon Scenic Byways in Prineville and the 61 mile route of the Columbia Scenic Highway from Troutdale through Hood River to The Dalles. According to Curt, “She puts the pedal down. Even the the kids say, ‘Mom moves!'”
Rhonda organized an evening riding group with the neighborhood ladies. Rhonda and her close friend Trina rode their Catrikes on Cycle Oregon Joy Ride.
She’s even the Poster Child -literally, on the poster- for the Bike to Defeat ALS ride.

A rare bacterial infection caused Geoff’s 2013 stroke. As part of his stroke recovery, Geoff rides his Catrike Villager over 1000 miles a year. In 2018, he added electric assist for hilly rides with family and friends. Stroke is NO LIMIT to riding a Catrike

Ric is a very active guy -coaching and reffing high school and college basketball. Ataxia immediately set about to undermine his balance -and eliminating cycling. Then, Ric found Catrike! In 2016, Randy lost a leg to cancer. He and his son Matt -who clearly inherited Randy’s sense of humor- describe the freedom and joy brought by his Catrike Villager. After recovery, Randy missed cycling -prompting a 2018 trip to RecumbentPDX. A half-mile into his demo ride, Randy already knew, “This is the ONLY place to be!” On the subject of pedal-assist motor, Randy says, “There is no question. You want it!”
Randy loves the exercise, the outdoors and the freedom or his regular 2-3 hour rides.
Many RPDX customers show incredible grit and bravery to get back out on the road. We’re honored to help them forge that path!

After losing a leg to cancer, Tish remained determined to ride. Custom-built Shimano Electronic Shifting ensured a smooth ride. A year later, Tish returned for a pedal-assist motor kit -displacing the electronic shift multi-gear hub with a motor kit. RPDX mechanics installed a Shimano DI2 electronic derailleur.

Updated Build
- Pedal-Assist Electric Motor
- Shimano DI2 10 Speed Electronic Derailleur
RPDX mechanics ensured proper fit and performance on Tish’s initial build
We initially built Tish’s Catrike Trail with a Shimano DI2 electronically-controlled rear hub. A year later, she came back looking for a bit more speed to keep up with her husband so we installed a rear hub motor -which went RIGHT where the DI2 rear hub was. So, RPDX mechanics installed a derailleur -but made it “DI2” to continue support for electronic shifting.

As Monisha strengthens her leg in anticipation of a new prosthesis, a Catrike Pocket with a right-side-only crank provides the perfect exercise. To smooth shifting, RPDX installed a Rohloff Speedhub 14 speed internal gear. Monisha later added a pedal-assist electric motor

Injuries related to an auto wreck cost Patty much of her right hand -but none of her sense of humor or determination.
Patti sports a space-age prosthesis, but still required extensive modification to her Catrike Trail to meet her needs. With RPDX help and Patti’s steely determination, she and husband Doug are back out on the road again -about 150 miles a month!

Twenty-five years of spinal arthritis robbed Liz of the activities she and husband Dave loved – kayaking and cycling. And, in just one day, a Catrike brought all that joy right back!!! RPDX joined Liz for her inaugural ride along the beautiful Portland Sunday Parkways.
No telling for sure, but we might have hooked Dave, too!
A spinal cord injury caused Adam to give up riding his 2 wheel bike. A Catrike gave him back his freedom!
Shop Rides and Fun Rides
Portland’s city-sponsored Sunday Parkways are among our favorite rides. Customers come to the store for cake and coffee before joining the throng of happy riders!
The music? The stop-you-in-your-tracks voice of Coralie Clement
This past Sunday, RPDX led folks on our first Motor Kit ride of the season. From the store, we transited downtown and up Montgomery to Council Crest Park. We then swung around Fairmont to Hewitt (Mel’s ABSOLUTE favorite Portland Street), across Sylvan and down through Washington Park. After a quick Zoo Bomb, we fueled up on pizza at Oven and Shaker and then headed down to the River Front, across the Steel Bridge and down the Eastbank Esplanade.
Sound like fun? Sorry you missed it? Well, check our Riding Events under -where else” “The Fun Stuff” tab on our website.
The more successful of our birthday rides. A bunch of pals join Mel for his 60th birthday on the Banks-Vernonia Trail. We even saw a rainbow! Stick around for the blooper reel!
It’s Mel’s birthday, so he picks the music and it’s Wes Montgomery (even when it’s NOT his birthday, he picks the music and it’s Wes Montgomery!).
.
What a disaster!! It was pouring down rain. It was cold. Everybody was miserable (well, okay, it was just the Californians – who made up the majority of the riders – who’d actually NEVER seen a raindrop before. THEY were miserable. The Oregonians didn’t notice). But, to be inclusive, we ALL turned around. There’s always next year, I guess.
The music is the amazing Mose Allison. If don’t have at least six Mose albums, you should!
We played hooky from the store on a gorgeous July afternoon for a a ride up Mt. Tabor followed by an amazing dinner! Trikes and Friends go so well together!
Again, the magic of Coralie Clement ‘s voice
RPDX and Friends had a great ride on Portland Forest Park’s Leif Erikson Trail!
It was NOT a bright sunny sunshinee day. But it was still a wonderful day. La Plata Argentina’s Alma Negra sets the music just right
Wow! What a ride! The Klickitat Trail is right across the Columbia River just waiting for us, so the Trike Guys went for a spin.
The Rigbees provided background!
Maybe the soggiest ride we’ve EVER taken, but that didn’t slow The Trike Guys one little bit! We grabbed the Leif Erikson trailhead at Skyline Drive and down we went!
Ferran Bosch plays us out with….well….. you already know
How about a shop ride down Portland’s Tom McCall Riverfront Park and over the Tilikum Crossing to the Springwater Corridor? Any day for me!
We were in no hurry. Rusty Draper’s classic Up the Lazy River summed up the ride nicely!
The first shop ride in OVER A YEAR!!! RPDX invited customers and friends to hop their low riders and take a little trip (..take a little trip..) through Ladds Addition, over the Tilikum Crossing, up to the Steel Bridge and back down the Eastside Esplanade and back to the shop. A freight train blocked our path, so we took the elevator at the Gideon Overcrossing Bridge.
We did it all to the steady beats of Doug Linse‘s Low Rider (admit it. you WERE tapping your toes!).
On a crisp November afternoon, RPDX and friends rode Catrikes up Mt. Tabor. Rain or Shine, Hot or Cold, Catrikes are a great ride!
